Alexis Herman's unique blend of experience--from social worker to White House assistant to the President--equips her with the skills and resolve to be a strong and articulate voice for working families. She brings to the department an insider's view, having served as director of the Women's Bureau under President Carter. Her hands-on experience managing human resources in the private sector adds to her ability to hit the ground running. I know she will work tirelessly on behalf of America's workers.

She will find a cadre of diligent, intelligent and highly motivated people at the Labor Department. The 16,000 employees with whom I have had the privilege of working during the past four years are among the finest public servants in any government. Protecting all workers' health and safety, pensions, wages, and family leave, as well as providing new opportunities for workers through education and training, is not just a job for these people. It is their life's work. Under the able direction of Alexis Herman, they will continue to play a critical role in moving our nation into the 21st century.
