Secretary of Labor Robert Reich today congratulated labor and
management in the McDonnell Douglas strike for reaching a tentative agreement
to end the 94 day old strike. The strike involved 6,700 hourly workers at the
McDonnell Douglas aerospace facility in St. Louis, Missouri.
"The International Association of Machinists and McDonnell Douglas are
to be commended for settling their dispute at the bargaining table," Reich
said. "This tentative agreement shows that even in an era of economic
transition labor and management can resolve tough issues like job security if
they are willing to work together."
Reich talked with both sides during the negotiations, contacting
McDonnell Douglas CEA Harry Stonecipher and IAM President George Kourpias
directly to offer his assistance. Emphasizing the importance of the aerospace
industry to our nation's economy and defense capability, the Secretary urged
the two parties to settle their differences as quickly as possible.
Reich recognized the work of House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt
(D-Mo), who invited both parties to his Washington, D.C. offices recently to
resume the talks after they had stalled.
