"I am pleased to announce that IBM will make every one of
its job openings available through America's Job Bank on the Internet,"
Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich told more than 1,500 employment and training
professionals today.
Reich made the announcement as he officially opened
JETT*CON (Joint Employment and Training Technology Conference), the first-ever
technology conference focused on workforce development.
"America's Job Bank is hot, hot, hot. It's one of the
Internet's most visited sites, with more than six million 'hits' a month,"
Reich said. "IBM's pool of some 24,000 jobs will be a great contribution to the
continued success of the America's Job Bank. Millions of Americans will have
access to this corporate leader's high quality job openings, and IBM will have
access to the hottest job marketplace in America," Reich added.
Reich challenged other major American corporations to
follow IBM's lead and put their openings on America's Job Bank. Another
technology firm participating in JETT*CON, Oracle Corporation, accepted that
challenge today, announcing it will list the 10,000 new jobs it expects to
create during the next year on America's Job Bank, as well.
During the speech, Reich presented Vice President Gore's
"Hammer Award" to the Federal and State America's Job Bank Internet Team for
their ground-breaking customer-focused efforts. The Hammer Award is the Vice
President's special recognition to teams which have made significant
contributions in support of President Clinton's National Performance Review
principles: putting customers first, cutting red tape, empowering employees and
getting back to basics.
America's Job Bank is a free, computerized job bank on the
Internet that links employers to job seekers. America's Job Bank collects,
connects and continuously updates job openings from 1,800 nationwide employment
service offices and from private companies which enter openings directly on the
job bank. The bank also links to 80 private placement agencies and directly
links to openings on corporate home pages. The Department of Labor's Employment
and Training Administration created and finances the system.
America's Job Bank can be reached on the Internet's World
Wide Web at "http://www.ajb.dni.us."
