Labor Secretary Robert B. Reich applauded labor and
management in the McDonnell Douglas/IAM strike as they returned to the
bargaining table today. He urged both parties to remain there until they reach
a settlement in the three-week old strike.
At the request of President Clinton, Reich called
Machinist Union President George Kourpias and McDonnell Douglas CEO Harry
Stonecipher yesterday. The two sides have not met since the strike began on
June 4.
"Nearly six thousand and seven hundred workers are
enduring significant economic hardship and uncertainty, and a major defense
manufacturer is without its experienced workforce as a result of this strike.
It is imperative that both sides come together and settle this dispute," Reich
said.
Reich added that "for American business to compete and
prosper, companies and their workers must use every means at their disposal to
achieve successful and fair collective bargaining arrangements. This means
staying at the negotiating table until an agreement is reached."
