"With half a million jobs to choose from, America's Job
Bank provides a wealth of opportunities for job seekers," Secretary of Labor
Robert B. Reich told recent graduates at George Washington University today.
The secretary and the new job seekers in Washington, D.C., went online to
search the free computerized job bank and found several good leads.
Hailed by Internet critics as one of the best sites on the
Internet, America's Job Bank (AJB) went from just 78,000 job listings when it
joined the Internet in Feb. 1995 to more than half a million job openings in
June. In May, job seekers tapped into AJB more than 5 million times.
"America's Job Bank is as current as the want ads but more
comprehensive. It helps you search the entire country for a good job at a good
salary," said Reich.
Reich said most of the jobs--95 percent--are with private
firms at higher than average salaries. There are openings for
professional/managerial, manufacturing/processing, clerical/sales/ service and
blue collar workers.
"We have heard from companies that are delighted with the
employees they've hired through the job bank and from job seekers who found
just the job they wanted," said Reich.
America's Job Bank collects, connects and continuously
updates job openings from 1,800 nationwide employment service offices and from
private companies which enter openings directly on the bank. The bank also
links to 80 private placement agencies and directly links to openings listed on
corporate home pages. The Department of Labor's Employment and Training
Administration created and finances the system.
A fact sheet, charts, and feedback from users of the
America's Job Bank are also available.
America's Job Bank can be reached on the Internet's World
Wide Web at "http://www.ajb.dni.us."
