Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich today issued the
following statement concerning the final budget package which will be
considered today by the House and Senate:
"This agreement eliminates the uncertainty and problems
caused by the series of stop-gap spending bills that we've been using to
operate the Department of Labor for more than half the current budget year.
"We're holding our own in this bill. The President's
initiatives to protect workers and provide education and training are
preserved. Although our budget was reduced seven percent, the President's
support ensured the reductions were far less drastic than the cuts first
proposed last year.
"But holding our own isn't enough - we need to do more to
give America's working men and women the training and skills they need to get
good jobs in today's economy. We need to do more to provide workplace
protections and we need to do more to protect pensions and retirement
savings.
"Congress will now begin considering a budget bill for the
fiscal year that starts Oct. 1. This legislation will be a good place to start
giving America's workers more of the tools they need to succeed in the new
economy."
