OPA Press Release: Statement Of Secretary Of Labor Robert B. Reich Regarding The Hutchinson-Ballenger Proposal [04/24/1996]

In his speech to the Service Employees International Union, AFL-CIO, in Chicago today, Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich said that "the Republican plan goes from bad to worse. Their message for up to 4 million working adults near the minimum wage is: 'You don't get a minimum wage increase, you get a tax increase instead.' Let's stop the gimmicks. Let the majority rule and let's raise the minimum wage for hard-working Americans now."

According to the Department of Labor, the Hutchinson-Ballenger proposal provides an Earned Income Tax Credit solely on the basis of family status, failing to take current income into consideration. The proposal is actually a tax increase on single workers and childless adults by denying them access to the Earned Income Tax Credit.
