OPA Press Release: Statement Of Secretary Of Labor Robert B. Reich Regarding The Minimum Wage [04/17/1996]

Today in Washington, 19 House Republicans announced that they will introduce a bill that would increase the minimum wage. On behalf of the President, I want to welcome them to our fight for a decent, fair livable wage.

What happened today proves once again that the debate about the minimum wage is not about Democrats versus Republicans. It is, quite simply, about right versus wrong. It is about fairness for America's working families.

The minimum wage should not be a partisan issue. For half a century, when inflation has eroded the minimum wage, Congress has acted to raise it, and has done so in an overwhelming bipartisan manner.

That is why I think it is high time for Senator Dole to lead, follow or get out of the way. Let the majority rule. Let Democrats and Republicans who support a higher minimum wage have a vote.
