Both the United Auto Workers and General Motors worked diligently to settle this dispute, and I applaud and congratulate both parties for reaching this tentative agreement. There were important issues involved in these negotiations, and it is a credit to both management and the union that they were able to work together to resolve them.

Management's goals of growth and profits, along with worker's concerns about job security and wages are not mutually exclusive. This administration is committed to policies that will support all these goals.

STATEMENT OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

I am pleased that the United Auto Workers and General Motors have reached a tentative agreement. GM and the UAW have a long and proud history of working together to solve their disputes.

I hope that the UAW and GM will continue to work together, and that their collective efforts achieve growth for the company, job security and good wages for workers.
