The Glass Ceiling Commission has awarded the 1995 Frances
Perkins-Elizabeth Hanford Dole National Award for Diversity and Excellence in
American Executive Management to the Miami Herald. The Miami Herald was
recognized for its sustained commitment to promote the minorities and women it
employs. An updated snapshot of the Herald's workforce in October 1995 shows
almost 60 percent minorities, 40 percent women, 38 percent women in senior
management, and 34 percent minorities in senior management.
The Perkins/Dole award recognizes a U.S. business for its
excellence in promoting a more diverse skilled workforce at the management- and
decision-making levels. It was established as part of the Glass Ceiling Act of
1991. It was awarded to the Xerox Corporation in 1994. The Commission's
Recommendations Report states that the media plays a critical role in
developing and elimating stereotypes and biases that affect the way minorities
and women are viewed in the workplace and society at large.
With the close of the Glass Ceiling Commission, the
authority to make the Perkins/Dole award also terminated.
