Labor Secretary Robert B. Reich today announced that
Deputy Labor Secretary Thomas P. Glynn has accepted the position of Chief
Operating Officer for Partners HealthCare System, Inc. in Boston. Reich has
asked Cynthia A. Metzler, currently assistant secretary for administration and
management to assume the deputy position.
"While I'm saddened that Tom is leaving," Reich said, "it
is a terrific job and an extraordinary opportunity. I've never worked with a
more talented person."
Prior to his confirmation as deputy labor secretary in
1993, Glynn served as senior vice president of finance and administration for
Brown University. As general manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation
Authority from 1989 to 1991, Glynn ran the nation's fifth largest transit
system.
As deputy labor secretary, the Massachusetts native
directed the department's day-to-day operations, including 18,000 employees and
$35 million budget, with a particular focus on the Administration's Reinventing
Government initiative.
"I'm proud to have been part of the Reich team," Glynn
said. "While I wouldn't have picked this timing, this is the right job in the
right place."
Partners HealthCare System, Inc. is the corporation
overseeing the affiliation of Brigham and Women's Hospital and The
Massachusetts General Hospital.
Metzler will assume the deputy position when Glynn leaves,
effective April 15.
"With 20 years of diverse top-notch experience in
management, Cynthia Metzler will step in and continue to help move this
organization forward," Reich said.
Metzler currently has the primary responsibility for
personnel, budget and administration within the department.
Prior to coming to the Labor Department, Metzler was the
Associate Administrator for Administration at the General Services
Administration. She has also served the Clinton Administration as Associate
Director of Presidential Personnel at the White House and as a member of the
Transition team.
Metzler received a law degree from the University of
Indiana in 1974 and bachelors degree from Purdue University in 1970. She holds
a masters of science degree in Human Resources from American University.
Reich also announced today that Anne Lewis, assistant
secretary for policy will temporarily serve as the acting chief of staff.
"With veteran staff stepping up to the plate, the labor
department will continue its mission of protecting workers and providing them
with the skills they need to succeed in the new economy," Reich said.
