For several months, the American economy has enjoyed a
Goldilocks recovery -- not too hot, not too cold. Today's employment figures
indicate that this Goldilocks has no intention of leaving -- she won't be
scared away by the bears.
For 13 consecutive months, the unemployment rate has
remained below six percent. Last month the economy added 121,000 new jobs as
growth continued at a steady clip with no signs of overheating. Since January
1993, the economy has generated more than 7.4 million new jobs.
Our remaining challenge is to ensure that the economic
recovery lifts the lives of every American. Yesterday, the Census Bureau
reported despite a decline in the poverty rate, 38 million Americans still live
in poverty, including more than one out of five children. We've got to get more
Americans on the ladder of opportunity -- by raising the minimum wage and
preserving the earned income tax credit.
Yesterday's Census Bureau figures also underscore that in
the new economy, skills matter more. The best way to make economic growth work
for everyone is to equip all Americans with job skills and an education to make
it on their own.
