U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS

STATEMENT OF SECRETARY OF LABOR ROBERT B. REICH

Thursday, Sept. 21, 1995

For more information call: 202/219-8211.

In overturning the chairman's decision to repeal the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, the Ways and Means Committee has reaffirmed a bipartisan commitment to American workers. We have a special responsibility to help workers who lose their jobs as a direct result of international trade policies. The Ways and Means Committee has wisely recognized that it would be very hard to win approval for future trade agreements unless the nation keeps its promise to help workers retool for new jobs.
