I am pleased that the Senate Appropriations Committee
today voted to restore some funding for worker protection, but more needs to be
done to protect workers' lives, their pensions and their rights on the job.
The committee also voted to cut the department's overall
budget by $1.5 billion below the FY 1995 level and $2.7 billion below the
President's request. This will severely curtail our ability to protect workers'
lives and rights and create new job opportunities through job training.
The committee had a chance to help young people who want
to work, but instead voted to effectively eliminate their summer jobs. Rather
than offering help to workers caught between jobs due to increased
international trade, military base closings or corporate downsizing, the
committee voted for deep cuts which will reduce our ability to help them get
the skills they need for new jobs.
Additionally, the committee's vote to prohibit the Labor
Department from enforcing the provisions of the executive order on striker
replacement, an authority upheld by the courts, destroys the President's abilty
to demand that taxpayers' dollars only be spent on quality goods and services.
