The U.S. Department of Labor will serve as host for the
ceremony opening this year's observation of Hispanic Heritage Month. The
program, open to the public, will be held Monday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m. in the
Great Hall of the Frances Perkins Building, 200 Constitution Ave. N.W.,
Washington, D.C.
The 50th anniversary of the end of WWII inspired this
year's theme: "Hispanics Defending America," offering tribute to the many
Hispanic military members who have contributed to the nation's defense.
The keynote speaker will be Brigadier General Manuel Flores
(USAR).
Flores currently is chief of the Professional Development
and Training Division at the U.S. Army Center for Public Works, Alexandria, Va.
He has long been active in Hispanic affairs and recently completed an
assignment with the National Association of Hispanic Federal Executives.
Others making remarks will include Thomas Glynn, deputy
secretary of labor; Hector Leyva, chair, National Hispanic and Employment
Foundation and Irasema Garza, Secretary, National Administrative Office.
