U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS

STATEMENT OF SECRETARY OF LABOR ROBERT B. REICH REGARDING THE DETROIT NEWSPAPERS LABOR DISPUTE

Fri., Aug. 11, 1995

For more information call: (202) 219-8211.

Management in the Detroit newspaper strike delivered bad news when they threatened to replace nearly 2,500 striking workers.

It has been the long standing position of this administration that permanently replacing strikers is more than just bad news for the workers involved. It is also bad business. The compact between workers and employers must be grounded in workplace practices that treat workers fairly and strengthen the bonds of trust between employers and employees.

The surest path to better jobs and higher profits is to treat workers as assets to be developed, not costs to be cut.

For the workers involved and for the good of the papers--and especially on behalf of the citizens of Detroit, who rely on their hometown newspapers as an information link to their community, nation and world--I urge both parties to take full advantage of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service and return to the bargaining table as quickly as possible to work out their differences and resolve this dispute.
