Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich today issued the following statement regarding the retirement of AFL-CIO President Lane Kirkland:

In his 16 years as President of the AFL-CIO, Lane Kirkland unified the house of labor, and fought for human rights and worker's rights throughout the world. Perhaps the greatest legacy of his half-century of service is the ferocious battle he waged against the trickle-down policies of the 1980s. In an age of greed and privilege for some, Lane stood up for fairness and opportunity for all -- and earned a place in the pantheon of American heroes.

Even though Lane is now moving on to other pursuits, he will remain a trusted advisor and a powerful voice for working Americans. On behalf of all those privileged to serve as Labor Secretary during Lane's tenure as the head of organized labor, I thank him for his extraordinary service, and wish him and Irena the very best.
