The effects of existing and proposed family and medical
leave policies will be explored in a Chicago public hearing on Monday, May 8,
on the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
Signed into law by President Clinton on Feb. 5, 1993, the
FMLA requires public hearings on experiences with the law. The Chicago hearing
is the first of three to be held and will take place from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30
p.m. at the Dirksen Federal Office Building, 219 S. Dearborn St., Chicago.
Issues to be discussed at the hearing will include:
existing and proposed mandatory and voluntary policies relating to family and
temporary medical leave; potential costs, benefits and the impact on
productivity, job creation and business growth of such policies; possible
differences in costs, benefits and business impact based on business type and
size; the impact of family and medical leave policies on employee benefits;
alternative state enforcement; cost reduction methods used by employers; and
related issues.
