Labor Secretary Robert B. Reich today welcomed President
Clinton's nomination of Edmundo A. Gonzales of Colorado as chief financial
officer for the Labor Department.
"Mr. Gonzales' background in business and management will
be a substantial asset to the department," said Reich. "He has an eye for
detail as well as the ability to see the big picture. We will be putting his
talents to good use."
The chief financial officer is the principal adviser and
assistant to the secretary and deputy secretary of labor on financial and
accounting operations, resource management and internal controls.
Gonzales was appointed head of the department's Office of
Labor-Management Standards in July 1993. Between 1983-93 Gonzales was an
executive for US West in Denver, where he supervised 6,000 employees as manager
of the Denver metropolitan area telecommunication services and directed risk
management operations and quality administration. He also practiced labor and
trade regulation law for US West.
Gonzales worked with the Denver public schools to help
develop new budget and strategic planning. He also was a field attorney for the
National Labor Relations Board.
A 1966 graduate of Arizona State University, Gonzales
earned a masters degree in business administration from the University of
Colorado in 1984 and a law degree from the University of Colorado Law School in
1972.
A member of a variety of professional, economic, education
and general community organizations, Gonzales and his wife have two daughters
and presently live in Alexandria, Va.
