Leslie Loble has been named the new chief of staff for the Labor Department, Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich announced today.

Loble is currently deputy assistant secretary for policy and budget. She joined the department in 1993 when President Clinton took office and later served for 10 months in 1994 as acting assistant secretary for policy.

She has played a leading role in many key department initiatives during the past two years, including Goals 2000 legislation and the landmark School-to-Work Opportunities Act, which was signed into law last May.

"Leslie has done an outstanding job, successfully managing complex new initiatives such as development and passage of the school-to-work law. She brings to this challenging job both the vision and the management experience it requires. I'm looking forward to having her leadership expanded in her new role," said Reich.

The School-to-Work Opportunities Act creates a nationwide system which combines classroom instruction with workplace training to better prepare students for today's job market. The combination of classroom and workplace training is made possible by a partnership between the educational, labor and business communities.

Prior to joining the department, Loble spent a decade at the Communications Workers of America (CWA), where she worked on health care reform, telecommunications and social policy issues.

In 1991, she moved from CWA to the National Governors' Association as a senior policy analyst. Later, she was at the Competitiveness Policy Council, a federal commission on U.S. competitiveness.

Loble has a master's degree from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She received her bachelor's degree from Cornell University.

Loble replaces Kathryn Higgins, who has moved to the White House to become assistant to the President and Cabinet Secretary.
