Today's Employment Situation Report makes it clear that we
have a rock solid economy.
The overall unemployment rate of 3.9 percent for the month
of September was led by declines in unemployment among women and young people.
The unemployment rate for African Americans declined to the lowest rate since
1972 and unemployment for women is near its lowest in almost 50 years.
The unemployment rate has been at or below 4.1 percent for
the past 12 months. We are now in the 115th month of the longest economic
expansion in our nation's history.
This month's report shows that employment in the service
sector rose by 200,000. Among the industries that had job growth in September
and have shown sustained job growth over the past nine months are engineering
and management services, health services, and computer services. In addition,
the construction sector created 30,000 new jobs.
Since 1993, employment in the federal government has
trended down by 320,000, to the lowest level since 1966.
American working families can continue to face the future
with confidence.
