OPA Press Release: Statement Of Secretary Of Labor Alexis M. Herman On Job-Related Deaths [08/17/2000]

Today's report on job-related fatalities for 1999 shows that we must do more to prevent workplace fatalities in the construction industry, just as we have reduced homicides in the workplace, especially in retail establishments. No workers should have to sacrifice their lives for their livelihoods.

The decline in homicides - 10 percent last year and 40 percent in the last six years - demonstrates that when we concentrate our efforts we can make a difference. OSHA worked with retailers and taxi companies to provide guidance on preventing violence. These efforts are clearly working.

The construction industry accounts for 20 percent of all workplace fatalities - the highest percentage for any single industry. We have focused OSHA's resources in construction and other high-risk work sites and will continue to do so. These deaths can be prevented.

We are experiencing one of the longest periods of sustained prosperity that our nation has seen. Protecting the workers who have helped to make this historic prosperity possible continues to be a top priority of this administration.
