The "core" (finished goods less food and energy) Consumer
Price Index increased by 0.2 percent in July for the fourth month in a row,
further suggesting stability in this measure of consumer prices. The July
increase in the "core" equals its average monthly increase in 1999.
For the month of July, the Consumer Price Index increased
0.2 percent, after increasing 0.6 percent in June. The energy index, which
advanced 5.6 percent in June, rose 0.1 percent in July. Price increases in
electricity, natural gas and fuel oil were mostly offset by a decline for
gasoline.
