Today's employment situation report shows that our nation's economy keeps rolling along at a solid and steady pace.

The overall unemployment rate for the month of July is 4.0 percent, unchanged over the month. We've been at or below 4.5 percent for 28 months. Since 1993, we've created over 22 million new jobs, an average monthly gain of 245,000.

This month we saw significant growth in manufacturing employment, after showing little growth over the first six months of 2000. We also saw impressive growth in retail trade employment, as eating and drinking establishments experienced strong growth for the second consecutive month.

The report makes clear that our economy is a steady tide that continues to lift the lives of millions of Americans.
