The U.S. Department of Labor has received the 2000 Commuter
Connections Employer Recognition Award. Sponsored by the Metropolitan
Washington Council of Governments, the award has been presented for the last
three years to employers of all types that voluntarily initiate programs to
encourage the use of commuting alternatives, thus contributing to the reduction
of vehicle emissions and traffic congestion. DOL was the only federal agency to
receive an award in the Atelework@ category.
The department's flexiplace program began in 1994 as a
joint union-management task force that worked cooperatively to establish a
pilot teleworking program for employees in the Washington, D.C., area. The
department offers both formal and informal flexiplace arrangements. A written
agreement between supervisor and employee establishes a formal arrangement, and
the employee works a specified number of days each week at the alternate site,
which for most is their home. Informal arrangements are temporary in nature and
do not require a written agreement.
Approximately 225 employees in the Washington area
participate under formal arrangements, with an equal or greater number
participating in informal arrangements. The result is a reduction in commuting
costs and time. The flexiplace program helps the department retain skilled
employees and allows greater flexibility for managers and employees.
