OPA Press Release: Statement Of U.S. Labor Secretary Alexis M. Herman Regarding The Adoption By The International Labor Organization Of Sanctions Against Burma [06/14/2000]

For more information call: (202) 693-4650

Today is an important day for the International Labor Organization and the people of Burma.

The ILO has said to the Burmese regime that we will no longer tolerate excuses or lies. The ILO and the world community have sent a loud and clear message that we will no longer tolerate horrific forms of forced labor. The reported beatings, rapes and murders must stop. And they most stop right now.

If the Burmese regime does not hear this message and take real action, the ILO will follow though with the sanction they have adopted today.
