The economy took a breather this month but it remains
robust and at near-record levels.
Unemployment rose 0.2 percent, to 4.1 percent, but remains
near a 30-year low. We have seen unemployment at or below 4.5 percent for more
than two years.
Payroll employment, at 131.7 million, seasonally adjusted,
actually increased by 231,000. This reflects the addition of 357,000 temporary
census workers.
Total private employment, seasonally adjusted, declined by
116,000 during the month, but the economy actually added nearly 700,000
workers.
Most of the slight unemployment rise during the month was
among less educated workers and underscores the need for education and training
to meet our economy's continuing demand for skilled workers.
Skills are the ticket for the new economy.
