OPA Press Release: Technology Program Gets $20.2 Million Grant to Train Workers in D.C., Virginia and Maryland [03/23/2000]

The U.S. Department of Labor today funded full development of the Washington Metro Area Technology Initiative, which will train 3,300 people in the Washington, D. C., metropolitan area for information technology jobs. Eligible trainees will be drawn from the city and a 50-mile radius in Virginia and Maryland.

"We are creating 21st Century solutions for 21st Century needs," President Clinton said. "We must help employers train workers for the skills that are most needed in the area's growing technology sector."

"The $20.2 million grant we are awarding today will prepare 3,300 workers for the most in-demand jobs," Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman said. "Two hundred people are enrolled now in the development phase of this project. We expect that nearly all of the trainees will find good-paying jobs in the area's high-tech companies."

An advisory board, consisting of representatives of area governments, employers and the Greater Washington Board of Trade, worked to develop the training initiative, which got started in 1998. The project is managed by a consortium of the Virginia, Maryland and District governments. With today's grant, the initiative will become fully operational.

The Labor Department previously provided $2.4 million in planning funds. Virginia managed the planning phase on behalf of the consortium and Maryland will manage the rest of it. The initiative is funded under the dislocated worker program of the Job Training Partnership Act.
