OPA Press Release: Statement Of U.S. Labor Secretary Alexis M. Herman Regarding Major Work Stoppages In 1999 [02/24/2000]

For more information call: 202-693-4650

In 1999, all measures of major work stoppages were at or below the lowest levels previously recorded in the 53-year years of compiling this data.

Unionized workers are benefitting from our historic expansion and enjoying real wage gains. In addition, there is a trend towards improved labor relations.

Seventeen major work stoppages began during the year, down from 34 stoppages in 1998. As a result, the number of idle workers fell from 387,000 in 1998 to 73,000 workers in 1999.

Of the 17 major work stoppages that began in 1999, 12 were in the private sector and five were in state and local government, all in educational services.
