OPA Press Release: Statement by Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman on the January Employment Situation [02/04/2000]

Today's employment situation report confirms that we are on track to set the longest economic expansion in our nation's history.

Payroll employment increased 387,000 in January, led by increases in construction, agricultural services and other weather sensitive industries, due in part to unseasonably mild weather.

Manufacturing added 13,000 jobs, following two months with almost no change. We also had solid gains in the service industries, including health and social services.

The overall unemployment rate was down 0.1 percent to 4.0, the lowest rate in 30 years. This includes a Hispanic record, down 0.3 to 5.6 percent, the lowest figure since record keeping began in 1973.

The message is clear: knowing means growing in this economy. Investment in the skilling and training of all workers is the key to breaking down employment barriers and opening opportunity for everyone.
