Statement of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao
On January Employment Numbers
WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the following statement on the January employment situation released today:
"This report shows that the fundamentals of the economy are strong, as the President said in his State of the Union address. Job growth is solid, wages are rising and the unemployment rate is falling. With the revisions in November and December, the economy has created 687,000 net new jobs in the last three months and finished out 2005 with over two million net new jobs created."
