Labor Department Receives 2005 President’s Quality Award

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today accepted the 2005 Presidential Award for Performance in Integrating Strategic Management Systems on behalf of the Department of Labor. The President's Quality Award is the highest award given to executive branch agencies for management excellence and for specific management initiatives as outlined in President George W. Bush's Management Agenda (PMA). This is the first time an agency has achieved recognition in this top award category.

"We at the Department of Labor are focused every day on doing our best to serve America's workers and implementing President Bush's commitment to deliver value for American taxpayers," said Chao. "We are delighted that the department has been recognized as the leader in contributing to the success of the President's Management Agenda."

The award recognizes the Department of Labor's overall performance and effectiveness in the integrated implementation of the five government-wide initiatives in the PMA. The department is also the first and only agency to achieve the highest score of "green" for all five categories of the PMA, including Strategic Management of Human Capital; Budget and Performance Integration; Improved Financial Performance; E-Government, and Competitive Sourcing.

This year's award ceremony was held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Last year, the department received two 2004 Presidential Awards for Management Excellence, one for Strategic Management of Human Capital and one for Budget and Performance Integration.

The Office of Personnel Management manages the President's Quality Award (PQA) Program, which recognizes organizations and projects that stand out in implementing the objectives of the President's Management Agenda. For more information about the PMA, visit www.results.gov.
