Statement of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao
On July Employment Numbers
WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued
the following statement on the July employment situation released today:
“July's employment figures show widespread gains with 207,000 new jobs.
We have had 26 straight months of job growth with nearly 4 million jobs
created since May 2003.
“With 133.8 million payroll jobs, more Americans are working now than
ever before - a record high for the seventh consecutive month. The unemployment
rate remained low at 5 percent - below the average of the decades of the
1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Average hourly earnings saw the largest increase
in a year.”
