U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Recognizes Contributions Of Merchant Mariners on National Maritime Day

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao will join Acting Maritime Administrator John Jamian at the National Maritime Day Observance and Memorial Service in Washington, D.C., Thursday, May 19. This marks Secretary Chao's third year in a row to participate in the service and her first to deliver the keynote address.

Secretary Chao's statement:

“On this National Maritime Day 2005, all Americans should honor the brave men and women who serve in the United States Merchant Marine and to remember those merchant mariners who have made the ultimate sacrifice and given their lives in the service of our country.

“American merchant mariners have a rich history in this nation. They have served in every American war since the United States was born. With their tradition of courage, patriotism and perseverance, merchant mariners have proven that they stand by this great nation no matter what the challenge. And in so doing, they have served as an inspiration to every generation of Americans.

“The United States Merchant Marine supports America's robust economy and the creation of new jobs. Today, 95 percent of our imports and exports are moved by water—more than one billion metric tons of cargo—and our waterways currently handle 140 million passengers each year. As always, the United States Merchant Marine is there, ready to provide the skills and knowledge to keep America on course for even greater economic prosperity that is shared by all.

“The nation is grateful for the special role the United States Merchant Marine plays in supporting our Armed Forces. Today, there are more than 8,000 brave merchant mariners serving the Military Sealift Command. These men and women are crewing auxiliary vessels for the United States Navy, supporting our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. As they have in every war in our nation's history, merchant mariners are delivering our troops and the combat gear, fuel and other supplies they need to complete the liberation and reconstruction of Iraq. All told, merchant mariners have delivered more than 50 million square feet of cargo, representing more than 92 percent of the equipment and supplies needed by our brave troops.

“The U.S. Merchant Marine plays a critical part in serving this great country during times of peace and war. They do so at great personal risk, and they do so with distinction. The contributions that merchant mariners make to this nation are immeasurable, and we all recognize the sacrifices they make so we can enjoy our freedom here at home and abroad.

“National Maritime Day 2005 keeps alive the memory of merchant mariners who sacrificed for us in the past and who honor us today with their committed service. It is altogether fitting to pay our respects to these men and women who have always been ready to assist in America's defense.”
