Statement of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao on December
Unemployment Numbers
WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the
following statement on the December unemployment numbers released today:
“The unemployment rate has dropped to the lowest level in over a
year. The economy has created jobs in each of the last five months, though last
month’s job growth was less robust than forecasters projected. The
President’s economic policies are working, and we need action on his
Six-Point Plan to maintain this forward momentum.
“There are other important positive developments in the
employment situation. For example, construction employment is at an all-time
high. Employment in education and health services continues to rise. The number
of long-term unemployed has dropped, and the unemployment rate for Hispanics
has declined significantly.”
