Labor Department and S.P. Richards Company Reach Settlement of $240,000 for 57 Women

Agreement Resolves Findings of Gender Discrimination at Mira Loma, California Facility

WASHINGTON—The S.P Richards Company of Mira Loma, Calif., has agreed to pay 57 women a total of $240,000 to settle a gender discrimination case. Under an agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), the company agreed to pay the women back wages, offer them employment opportunities and revise its hiring practices.

OFCCP alleged that S.P. Richards failed to afford female applicants equal employment opportunities in its hiring process for its “order filler” and “stocker” jobs. S.P. Richards Company is a subsidiary of the Genuine Parts Company, headquartered in Atlanta, Ga. and has a contract valued at $2,000,000 with the United States Navy to provide “Napa Genuine Auto Parts.”

“The settlement of $240,000 reached on behalf of these women reflects the Labor Department’s continued commitment to vigorously fighting systemic discrimination in the workplace,” said Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao. “We will continue to protect American workers by pursuing employers that engage in unlawful practices.”

As part of the settlement, S.P. Richards will distribute $120,685 in back pay, benefits and interest to the women. In addition, the company agreed to hire five women, resulting in a total of $120,016 in annualized salary.

S.P. Richards Company further agreed to revise its hiring and selection procedures to preclude future discrimination against female applicants. The total monetary value in this case is $240,701.

OFCCP, an agency of the Labor Department’s Employment Standards Administration, enforces Executive Order 11246 and other laws that prohibit employment discrimination by federal contractors. The agency monitors federal contractors to ensure that they provide equal employment opportunities without regard to race, gender, color, religion, national origin, disability or veterans’ status.
