Statement of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao on the April
Unemployment Numbers
WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the
following statement about April’s unemployment numbers released today:
“The unemployment rate for April rose from 5.8 percent to 6.0
percent and the economy lost 48,000 non-farm payroll jobs. It is encouraging
that nearly 700,000 more people are participating in the civilian labor force
this month.
“I am disappointed that the unemployment rate has risen. The
President believes that every American who wants a job should have one. This
underscores the need for Congress to pass the President’s Jobs and Growth
Plan.”
