Statement of U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao on
Approval of the Back to Work Incentive Act by the House Committee
on Education and the Workforce
WASHINGTONU.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the
following statement today upon approval of the Back to Work Incentive Act
(H.R. 444) by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce:
I applaud Chairman Boehner, Subcommittee Chairman McKeon and the
members of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce for their
leadership and prompt action in introducing and approving the Back to
Work Incentive Act. Once enacted, the legislation would make available
the Personal Reemployment Accounts proposed by the President in his Job Growth
package.
Because experience has shown that unemployed workers have a wide
range of needs, we must be creative in order to ensure each worker receives the
reemployment services package he or she requires. The Presidents proposed
Personal Reemployment Accounts are an innovative means to meet workers
unique needs and help them to more quickly secure good jobs. Individuals may
determine they need extensive retraining in order to compete for jobs in a
high-growth industry, while others may only need to complete a short-term
computer course or purchase child care in order to return to work
quickly.
