Labor Secretary Appoints Alec J. Koromilas as Chair of
the U.S. Employees Compensation Appeals Board
WASHINGTONU.S.
Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced the appointment of Alec J.
Koromilas as chairman of the United States Employees Compensation Appeals
Board (ECAB). Koromilas, named to the board in January 2002, was previously an
attorney in private practice in Dover, N.H., specializing in tort and
workers compensation litigation, and is a former chair of the New
Hampshire Workers Compensation Appeals Board from 1993 to 1998.
Judge Koromilas experience in judging workers
compensation cases and representing injured employees will serve American
workers well, said Secretary Chao. His vision, coupled with his
expertise in both the federal and state workers compensation arenas,
comes at a critical time, as the ECAB works to meet the needs of federal
employees in the 21st century.
Koromilas received his B.A. in political science from Boston University
and a J.D. from Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord, N.H. He replaces Michael
Walsh as chairman of the ECAB. Judge Walsh has served as chairman since
1985.
We appreciate Judge Walshs years of service to the
department and to federal employees, said Chao. He has provided
judicious decision-making in this important area of the law and in reducing an
overwhelming caseload.
The ECAB is a three-judge appellate board in the Office of the U.S.
Secretary of Labor. ECAB is the final avenue of review for all federal workers
who have been injured or have become ill as a result of their federal
employment. The board serves approximately three million federal employees and
awards in excess of $1.8 billion in benefits annually.
