Eugene Scalia to Step Down as Acting Solicitor of
Labor
WASHINGTONThe U.S. Department of Labor announced today that
Eugene Scalia will be stepping down as Acting Solicitor of Labor.
The Solicitor is the Departments principal legal officer.
President Bush appointed Scalia to the position through a recess appointment in
January 2002, and when his recess appointment expired in November of last year,
he was designated Acting Solicitor by the President.
We have some notable accomplishments, Scalia said,
including the Departments assistance in resolving the labor dispute
on the West Coast ports; steps taken to improve the Departments
enforcement and regulatory programs; and internal changes that I hope will be
of lasting value. I have concluded, however, that now is an appropriate time
for me to leave the Department and take on other challenges.
Gene Scalia has made an invaluable contribution to this Department
and its efforts to help American workers, Secretary Elaine L. Chao said.
He has served his country well, and we will miss him greatly.
Scalia will leave the Department on January 17. Howard Radzely,
currently the Deputy Solicitor, will succeed Scalia as the Acting Solicitor of
Labor.
