Eugene Scalia Designated Acting Solicitor for the
Department of Labor
WASHINGTON—President George W. Bush today designated Eugene
Scalia Acting Solicitor for the Department of Labor. Scalia had been the
Solicitor of Labor since January, pursuant to a recess appointment by the
President that expired when the Senate went into recess.
Scalia was nominated for the position in April 2001 and was approved by
the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in October 2001.
However, for the past year, the outgoing Senate leadership refused to bring the
nomination to a vote before the full Senate. The appointment will provide
continuity in the Department’s senior leadership until the full Senate has
an opportunity to vote on his nomination.
