Labor Grant Will Aid
Dislocated Kentucky Workers U.S. Secretary of Labor
Elaine L. Chao Announces National Emergency Grant of Up To $3.4 Million To
Supplement Re-employment Programs
WASHINGTON U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced
a National Emergency Grant of up to $3.4 million that will aid 680 workers laid
off or facing future lay-offs from Mattel, Inc. in Murray, Ky. Over $1.9
million will be provided immediately. National Emergency Grants are part of the
secretarys discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a
request and the grant guidelines have been met.
The President and I are committed to helping Kentuckys
displaced workers access the job and skills training they need to find new
re-employment, Chao said. We hope these funds will be deployed
quickly to help Kentucky workers. As a Kentuckian, I am especially sensitive to
the plight of those who are suffering in our state.
The grant project will be operated by the West Kentucky Workforce
Investment Board and will supplement existing re-employment programs including:
job search assistance, job development, job placement, basic skills training
and counseling.
Helping dislocated workers regain their place in our workforce is
a top priority for this Administration, said Chao. This National
Emergency Grant for workers who have lost their jobs will hopefully help them
regain their footing during a difficult period in their lives. We hope it will
help them toward future self-sufficiency and independence.
