U. S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao visits Asian Pacific American community in Pittsburgh

Highlights Department of Labor’s programs and services for ethnic communities

PENNSYLVANIA – U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao met with members of the Asian Pacific American community during her visit to Pittsburgh today, Monday, Aug. 5th. As the first visit to the city as the Secretary of Labor, Chao highlighted the department’s extensive work on behalf of the Asian Pacific American community.

The meeting took place after Secretary Chao accompanied President George W. Bush to meet with the nine coal miners who were rescued after 77 hours underground in Quecreek Mine, Somerset, Pa. The Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), was the lead agency on site and the architect of the successful rescue strategy that reunited the miners with their family last week.

Secretary Chao has visited a number of Asian Pacific American communities throughout her tenure as Secretary. Under her leadership, the Department of Labor has the largest number of Asian Pacific American appointees: 14, including three PAS's (Presidential Appointments with Senate Confirmation).

Secretary Chao is the first Asian American woman to serve in the Cabinet. President George W. Bush has appointed more than 70 appointees throughout his Administration including an historic number of 18 Americans of Asian Pacific descent to serve in cabinet or sub-cabinet positions.
