Statement of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao on Unemployment
Figures for June 2002
WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued
the following statement today on the increase in the unemployment rate from 5.8
percent in May 2002 to 5.9 percent in June 2002:
"The unemployment rate continues to remain fairly steady. There are a
number of positive economic indicators this month including significant growth
in the health sector, increase in manufacturing workweek and factory overtime,
and construction employment. Additionally, employment in hotel and
transportation sectors is up this month beyond seasonal expectation. Other
economic indicators continue to show a steady but slow recovery."
"As we stay on course for economic revitalization, the President and I
remain dedicated to helping American workers get back to work in secure,
well-paying jobs."
