Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Reaches Out to MBA’s

Initiative Launched as Part of President’s Management Agenda

PHILADELPHIA – U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao has announced a new initiative to attract graduates of Masters in Business Administration Programs to work at the Department of Labor.

The Department of Labor’s new initiative, The MBA Outreach Program, is inspired by the President’s Management Agenda, which is designed to attract employees with different types of skills so they can bring new approaches to government management.

“We are doing this in spirit of President George W. Bush’s vision for a results-oriented, citizen-centered and market based government,” said Chao.

Chao also explained that the program will help address the issue of filling management-level jobs as senior staff retire. “In the next five years, the federal government’s senior tier of experienced career management is heading toward retirement. Our government has benefited greatly from the institutional knowledge and expertise of these professionals, and now we must face the task of attracting new talent to take their places as they retire.”

“MBAs are trained in key management skills - quantitative analysis, strategic planning, measuring objective organizational objectives and goals to outcomes - that are valuable in the changing world of public administration.” Chao said. “This new initiative reflects the Department of Labor’s commitment to a quality labor force to serve the American people.”

The Department of Labor will focus its recruitment efforts for recent graduates at schools with strong business programs, using incentives such as recruitment bonuses and student loan repayment programs to attract MBA graduates. The Department will work to attract mid-level and management-level MBA professionals through marketing to established business associations and publications.

Chao made the announcement during remarks to the Society for Human Resource Management 54th Annual Conference and Exposition in Philadelphia. She also discussed other department-wide initiatives including compliance assistance, which Chao described as “a new culture of responsibility at the Department of Labor that will help make worker protections work.” Chao also discussed the Department of Labor’s YouthRules! program that is designed to bring teens, parents, educators and employers together to promote positive and safe work experiences for all of America’s young workers.
