Major Grant Will Aid 2,450 Dislocated Workers In Nevada National
Emergency Grant Provides Retraining In Wake Of Sept. 11
WASHINGTON- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today
announced a National Emergency Grant of up to $5.8 million to the state of
Nevada to assist workers who have lost their jobs from the hospitality, tourism
and related industries subsequent to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"This Administration is working to ensure that the thousands of workers
affected by the Sept. 11 attacks receive the skills and on-the-job training
they need to find re-employment," Chao said. "This National Emergency Grant
will allow the state of Nevada to supplement existing retraining and
re-employment programs and provide needed services to dislocated workers."
The grant will aid approximately 2,450 laid off workers and will be
operated by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation,
Division of Workforce Investment Support Services. A of $1.9 million, will be
awarded initially. The funds will provide transition assistance to help workers
find new employment. Assistance services include basic education and literacy
training, on-the-job training, job search and referral, and testing and
assessment.
The funds are being made available from the National Emergency Grant
fund, which is the Secretary's discretionary funding under the Dislocated
Worker Program of the Workforce Investment Act. The grants are awarded after a
state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
National Emergency Grants constitute a major part of President Bush's
economic security package. If passed by the Senate, the President's package
will assist economic recovery by providing increased assistance to dislocated
workers, including assistance with continuing private health insurance
coverage.
