Labor Grant Will Aid Dislocated Airline Industry Workers
National Emergency Grant To Georgia Will Supplement Re-employment
Programs
WASHINGTON- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today
announced a National Emergency Grant of up to $3 million to the state of
Georgia to assist in the retraining and skills development of workers who have
lost their jobs as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"The Sept. 11 attacks have left their mark not only on our society, but
on our economy," Chao said. "It is our number one priority to ensure that
workers laid off as a result of the tragedies receive the skills training and
job placement aid they need to find re-employment."
The grant will aid approximately 884 laid-off workers and will be
operated by the Atlanta Regional Commission. The funds will provide transition
assistance to help workers find new employment. Assistance services include
basic education and literacy training, on-the-job training, job search and
referral, and testing and assessment.
The funds are being made available through the National Emergency Grant
fund, which is the Secretary's discretionary funding under the Dislocated
Worker Program of the Workforce Investment Act. The grants are awarded after a
state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
National Emergency Grants constitute a major part of President Bush's
economic security package. If passed by the Senate, the President's package
will assist economic recovery by providing increased assistance to dislocated
workers, including assistance with continuing private health insurance
coverage.
