Indiana To Receive Federal Aid For Dislocated Workers National
Emergency Grant Provides Retraining In Wake Of Sept. 11 Terrorist
Attacks
WASHINGTON- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today
announced a National Emergency Grant of up to $3.1 million to the state of
Indiana to assist workers in the airline industry who lost their jobs as a
result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"The Sept. 11 attacks have had a lasting effect on airline and related
industry workers," Chao said. "This Administration is working with the states
to ensure that every laid off worker receives the skills training and job
placement aid they need to find re-employment."
The grant will aid approximately 942 laid-off workers and will be
operated by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. A total of funding
$1.1 million will be awarded initially. The funds will provide transition
assistance to help workers find new employment. Assistance services include
basic education and literacy training, on-the-job training, job search and
referral, and testing and assessment.
The funds are being made available from the National Emergency Grant
fund, which is the Secretary's discretionary funding under the Dislocated
Worker Program of the Workforce Investment Act. The grants are awarded after a
state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
National Emergency Grants constitute a major part of President Bush's
economic security package. If passed by the Senate, the President's package
will assist economic recovery by providing increased assistance to dislocated
workers, including assistance with continuing private health insurance
coverage.
