U.S. Secretary Of Labor Elaine L. Chao
Statement on Unemployment Numbers For January 2002

WASHINGTON— Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the following statement on the decline in the unemployment rate from 5.8 percent in December 2001 to 5.6 percent in January 2002:

“I am encouraged by today’s numbers, but it’s still too early to declare victory over the recession,” Chao said. “Even though job losses were less than they have been since Sept. 11, we still lost nearly a hundred thousand jobs last month, and millions of Americans remain unemployed.

“As the President declared in his State of the Union address this week, we are committed to beating this recession and building a strong economic recovery. These numbers show that we are moving in the right direction, but we are far from finishing the job.

“That’s why the Senate needs to take action on the President’s agenda to revive our economy – by passing the President’s economic security plan, his national energy plan that will create hundreds of thousands of high-paying jobs and Trade Promotion Assistance.

“If Washington does its job, more Americans will have jobs this year.”
