Major National Emergency Grant Will Aid
Commercial Fisherman Nearly $5.9 Million To Massachusetts To Re-Train
Workers
WASHINGTON U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced
a National Emergency Grant of almost $5.9 million that will aid over 750
workers impacted by new federal regulations affecting the fishing industry in
the North Atlantic.
It is our duty to see that the fishermen and related industry
workers receive the job and skills training they need to find
re-employment, Chao said. The administration and the Commonwealth
of Massachusetts are working to get them back to work.
The grant project will be operated by the Commonwealth Corporation in
Gloucester, Mass., New Directions in New Bedford, Mass., and Job Training and
Employment Corporation in Hyannis, Mass. The money will supplement existing
re-employment programs including: job search assistance, job development, job
placement, basic skills training and counseling. Workers will be trained in
many different areas including: medical or nursing assistant, clerical and data
entry, computer applications and aviation mechanic.
National Emergency Grants are part of the secretarys discretionary
fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and the grant
guidelines have been met. National Emergency Grants constitute a major part of
President Bushs Back-to-Work package. If passed by the Senate, the
presidents package will assist economy recovery by providing increased
assistance to dislocated workers, including assistance with continuing private
health insurance coverage.
